Completion and Acceptance of Breakwaters and Cofferdams for Northern Port Basin at Changxing Island

Completion and Acceptance of Breakwaters and Cofferdams for Northern Port Basin at Changxing Island

The breakwaters and cofferdams built by the Third Eng. Co., Ltd. of CCCC – First Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd. for the Northern Port Basin at Changxing Island in Dalian were inspected for acceptance on 15th November, 2012, and passed the acceptance inspection, which were then officially handed over to the Client.

The breakwaters and cofferdams are located at the northern part of Changxing Island, composing of a 3604 m long east breakwater, a 2927 m long east cofferdam, a 4966 m long west breakwater and a 3263 m long west cofferdam. The two cofferdams are both rubble mound structures while the two breakwaters are composite structures with rubble mounds and caissons. The contract value of the project was CNY 1.44 billion.

The construction of the project began in July 2009 and the main structure of the works was completed at the end of 2011. During the execution of the project, the project management and its workforce had overcome the freezing weather never recorded in fifty years and severe wave conditions in the working area. The total volume of work carried out for the project included the placement of 10.17 million m3 of core materials and 150,000 m3 of netted rock blocks, placement of cast-in-situ concrete of 153,000 m3 for the wave walls, and prefabrication and installation of six 3000 t caissons and 98142 pieces of various armor blocks.

Being an effective shield to protect the northern port basin at Changxing Island against the open-sea winds and waves, the completed works have provided a protection for a sea area of 4.3 km2 and a well protected shoreline of 12.2 km, thus becoming a powerful engine to propel the industrial development in the coastal region.
