5月3日00:50,伶仃水域从波浪翻滚转为潮流渐缓,壮观的拖带作业船队保持均匀航速,海上队形壮观,旖旎前行,岛隧工程首节沉管浮运作业顺利完成,到达沉管系泊区域。
    首节(E1)沉管于5月2日14:00在桂山预制场深坞坞口完成编队,由2艘5200匹、1艘6900匹和1艘6800匹大马力全回转拖轮进行吊拖,4艘全回转拖轮进行帮托,船队平缓驶离桂山岛深坞区后,开始了近7个小时的海上之旅。
    编队首先通过了近1.5公里的预制场支航道,于15:30进入榕树头航道,此时海水流速逐渐加大,最大时达到115cm/s,波浪翻滚,涌上管节顶面,8艘拖轮马达轰鸣,妥善配合,不断变换拖力和拖拽角度,吊拖和帮拖方式各自发挥优势,完成上千次配合变换。
    该航道作为重要的通航水域,过往船只密集,7艘警戒船划分为核心警戒区和外围警戒区,充分发挥护航作用,多次驱离误闯渔船,确保了编队安全。
    经过此次浮运最为艰难的航段后,编队驶入出运航道。此时海水流速稍减,编队航速加快,于23:50到达转向区。此时位于津安3指挥室内的操作核心团队高度配合,不断向拖轮发出指令,沉管在转向区顺利完成“华丽转身”,GINA端朝向西人工岛暗埋段,缓缓前行。
    进入深夜,海水流速渐缓为10-30cm/s,编队在基槽内安全拖航,V工区浮运团队集结队伍,准备带缆作业。经过1.5小时匀速前行,首节沉管浮运编队于5月3日00:50顺利到达系泊区域,开始沉管系泊作业。
